Dr. J. Melvin Deese, Jr., a native of Columbus, Georgia and graduate of the University of Georgia, received his Orthopaedic Residency

Training at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He then completed a post graduate fellowship in Surgery and Disorders of the Foot and Ankle at the University of Texas, Health Science Center in Houston, Texas.

Throughout his medical school and orthopaedic residency, Dr. Deese worked and trained with some of the most notable Sports Medicine Specialists in the world including Dr. James Andrews of Alabama Sports Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama (formerly with the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia). He is a charter member of the American Society of Sports Medicine Fellowships and a long time member of the Hughston Sports Medicine Society. For two years he also served as Medical Director of the Hughston Clinic Brunswick Office.

In addition to a long list of scientific publications and presentations, he also co-authored a chapter of the Sports Medicine textbook, "Sports Injuries of the Foot and Ankle".

Dr. Deese has been actively involved in treating sports injuries from professional and collegiate ranks to high school and recreational athletes. Dr. Deese's practice focuses on treatment and reconstruction of the shoulder, knee, foot, and ankle.

Dr. Deese is the President and Founder of Summit Sports Medicine. He recently co-founded the Georgia Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers which addresses the issues and concerns of surgery centers statewide. He lives here with his wife and three children.
 

Michael J. Sullivan, M.D.

Dr. Michael J. Sullivan earned his Bachelor's of Science in Biological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. He graduated

Magna Cum Laude and was in the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He pursued his medical degree at University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. While there, he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in his junior year of medical school and graduated at the top ten percent of his class.

After medical school, he completed residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. While training at Tulane, he had the opportunity to work at many hospitals including the venerable Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

Following residency, Dr. Sullivan gained additional training in Hand Surgery through a fellowship at Baylor University in Houston, Texas. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Sullivan enjoys the practice of general orthopaedics and has a special interest and aptitude for Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Other professional memberships include The Georgia Orthopaedic Society and The Georgia Orthopaedic Hand Society. Dr. Sullivan was also recently awarded the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand.
 

Katherine L. Maurath, M.D.

As a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, also known as a physiatrist, Dr. Katherine L. Maurath specializes in diagnostic

evaluation and non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular problems. She is Board Certified in Physiatry.

"The highlights of my day are seeing patients improve and return to their desired level of function," states Dr. Maurath. Her skill and dedication has been recognized by her peers when selected for "Best Doctors in America" award. She also appeared on The Washingtonian's "Top Area Doctors" list on two occasions.

Joining Dr. Melvin Deese in 1998, she was the first physiatrist in Glynn County. Dr. Maurath moved here from Fairfax County, Virginia where she was in private practice with 15 orthopaedists. She enjoys family activities with her husband and two sons when not caring for her patients.
 

Denny Carter, M.D.
Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Carter is a graduate of Mississippi State University and The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine. He completed

his orthopaedic residency at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. During residency Dr. Carter served as Assistant Team Physician for McNeese State University giving him the opportunity to work with Dr. David Drez, a leading authority on sports medicine, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital in Lake Charles Louisiana.

Dr. Carter received several awards and scholarships based on academic excellence and leadership skills, including the Merck Manual Award which is given to students graduating from The Medical College of Georgia with a perfect academic record. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Carter joined Summit Sports Medicine in July of 2003. He practices general orthopaedics and has a special interest in total joint replacement surgery and arthroscopic surgery. Dr. Carter's family is from Hazlehurst and Baxley, Georgia. He has lived in South Georgia for much of his life.
 

Beau Sasser, M.D.
Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Sasser is a native of Glynn County having been born and raised here, graduating from Glynn Academy in 1990. He attended

undergraduate school at Emory as well as Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He then returned to Georgia completing his medical doctorate degree from The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Dr. Sasser remained at MCG through 2004 completing both his internship and orthopaedic residency.

Upon competion of the residency program, Dr. Sasser received exclusive sports medicine training while in a Fellowship program with the Kansas City Orthopaedic institute. During his time there, Dr. Sasser worked with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs treating a variey of sports and orthopaedic injuries incurred by these professional athletes.

Completing his medical training In 2005, Dr. Sasser relocated back to Glynn County and joined Summit Sports Medicine where his general and sports medicine practice continues.

Dr. Sasser is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Sugeons and is board eligible with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery

 

Buck Cavalier, M.D.
Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Cavalier received his medical degree in 1999 from Medical College of Pennsylvania-Hahnemann University School of Medicine

(now Drexel University). During his clinical clerkship there he was the recipient of the Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery award.

Following medical school, Dr. Cavalier stayed at Drexel for his internship and orthopaedic residency training. During residency, Dr. Cavalier was active in the orthopaedic care of the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers as well as Division I college athletes.

Following residency Dr. Cavalier completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at the internationally known Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville, KY where he trained with some of the nation's leading spine surgeons. There he gained experience in treating all aspects of spinal pathology including degenerative conditions, spinal deformity, trauma, tumor and infection involving the cervical, thoracic and lumber spine.

Dr. Cavalier is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society. He is board eligible with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
